Orchestra Workshop: the Petit Orchestre de l’Est
‘I love music that is not deaf to the song of the wind in the plain, nor insensitive to the flavours of the night.’ Vladimir Jankélévitch
Explore the sounds and rhythmic richness of traditional Balkan music
Valentine Mercier created the Petit Orchestre de l’Est during a workshop in 2010 for the purpose of transmitting and interacting with some of the sounds and rhythms of traditional Balkan music (Bosnia, Greece, Lebanon, Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey). The scores, arranged and adapted by Valentine Mercier, are provided to the musicians throughout the year.
The variable shape and size of this orchestra workshop allows musicians to acquire a new repertoire while addressing, in detail, certain rhythms and patterns characteristics of these regions, as well as special instrumental techniques and some specific aspects of improvisation (although no prior improvisation experience is required!).
New students benefit from a learning period to acquire the repertoire within the orchestra before participating in public performances.
Target audience: Open to musicians with at least three years of practice on a modern instrument
